Coconut oil, an item easily found in the health food aisle of your local grocery store, has long been a well-kept secret of South Indian women and beauty editors alike.

Coconut oil: it's inexpensive. It smells divine. It's travel-friendly. Most important, it works. Because coconut oil has a small molecular structure, it is easily absorbed through the skin. It's beneficial not only for those with mature, dry skin, but for those who are looking for a product that will help prevent wrinkles and rough spots. Coconut oil has a multitude of uses – read on for why coconut oil is regarded as one of the best natural beauty products available on the market.

It's a hair conditioner

In the shower, take half a teaspoon of melted coconut oil (it comes as a solid) and add it to your conditioner. Rinse out as usual. Or try this: on damp hair, rub a very small amount between your palms (too much will leave your hair looking greasy) and apply it to the ends of your hair before you air dry or blow dry. The oil seals the ends and makes your hair look glossy and healthy, without weighing it down.

It's a foot smoother

A surefire way to soft, touchable feet is by adding coconut oil to your footcare regimen. Slough off all the dead skin off your heels by using a foot file of your choice (try Ped Egg or Diamancel). Mix one part Vaseline and one part coconut oil, rub into your feet, and wear breathable cotton socks before going to bed. You'll greet the next day with perfectly pedicured feet.

It's a lip balm

If you like the scent of coconut oil, this edible product will be a treat for you to apply on your dry, chapped lips. Transfer a small amount of solid coconut oil into a plastic container with a turn cap, throw it into your purse, and apply liberally throughout the day. (Warning: in the summer heat, the coconut oil may liquefy – always keep coconut oil in room temperature or colder.)

It's an eye makeup remover

Rub coconut oil onto your lids for easy eye shadow and mascara removal. Wipe away with a damn cloth or soft cotton pad. Not only will it remove your eye makeup, it's good for your lashes, too.

It's a deodorant

While coconut oil won't prevent you from sweating, its natural, inoffensive scent is a great underarm deodorizer. If heavy sweating is a problem for you, try a clinical strength anti-perspirant before bed, and apply a thin layer of coconut oil in the morning.

It's a shaving oil

Forget buying cans of shaving cream – coconut oil can be slathered on the legs and underarms and used as a shaving oil. You'll avoid nicks and cuts, all while ensuring your skin is beautifully moisturized.
