Mix up an at-home hair mask filled with proteins and other vitamins and minerals vital for a healthy head of locks.

It is important to give hair a little tender care. Between frequent shampooing, harsh chemicals in beauty products and blasts of heat from blow dryers and other hair appliances, hair needs some special treatment to look its best.

What is a Hair Mask?

A hair mask restores and repairs hair that has been damaged with dyes, highlights, heat and other sources associated with a styling routine. They improve the condition of your hair. Different mask ingredients help with different types of hair.

Hair Mask for All Types of Hair

Avocado and other fruits play a prominent role in hair masks for all types of hair. Try either of these easy recipes:

  • Mix half of a ripe avocado, one tablespoon of olive oil, half of a small banana and one egg yolk together. Massage into hair. Cover with plastic wrap or a shower cap. Leave in for one hour. Rinse and shampoo.
  • Mix one tablespoon lemon juice with one mashed avocado. Add one raw egg and one half cup of plain yogurt. Add more yogurt if desired to achieve a thicker consistency. Apply mixture to a dry head of hair and wrap in a warm damp towel, plastic wrap or a shower cap. Wait 15 minutes and shampoo.

Hair Help for Dry Hair

Mix two eggs with five tablespoons of olive oil. Massage the mixture into the hair. Cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap. Wait 30 minutes. Remove the cap and shampoo as usual, rinsing well.

Damaged Hair Needs Extra Attention

  • Combine five tablespoons of olive oil with one and a half tablespoons of brown sugar. Mix in one-half teaspoon of vanilla extract. Massage mixture into hair and then wrap hair with a towel, plastic wrap or a shower cap. Wait 30 minutes, then shampoo.
  • Mix a very ripe banana with a few drops of almond oil. Apply this mixture to your hair. Wait 15 minutes. Rinse with soda water and then shampoo as usual.

Help for Frizzy Hair

Apply a half a cup of mayonnaise from scalp to ends of hair. Wrap hair in plastic wrap or a shower cap for 15 minutes and then shampoo as usual. Can't stand the overwhelming mayo odor? Add two drops of almond oil to the mayonnaise before applying it.

At home Tips for Getting Rid of Dandruff

There are several recommendations for getting rid of stubborn dandruff:

  • Massage vinegar into the scalp and leave in for 15 minutes. Then, wash hair thoroughly. Repeat daily for several days until the dandruff has disappeared.
  • Dissolve two aspirins in your capful of dandruff shampoo. Follow with a good conditioner.
  • Mix five tablespoons of dried thyme with two cups of water. Boil the mixture for 10 minutes. Strain it and allow to cool. Massage cooled mixture into scalp and shampoo after 30 minutes.

Find a hair mask (or a couple) that work best and keep the ingredients on hand. The results are instantaneous and can be addicting. Be careful of over-doing it. Some masks add oils to the hair. Consider your hair type. Once or twice a month is often adequate for maintaining healthy and shiny hair.
